In addition to nickel testing, the services of Sheffield Assay Office Analytical Services are much in demand for a range of tests which applies to jewellery and many other products, which can include gifts, accessories and even children’s toys.

Lead & Cadmium Testing

LEAD - Sheffield Assay Office AS is approved by US CPSC for the testing of Lead in surface coatings and substrates.

From August 2009 US federal law limits the content of Lead in an item to 300ppm (0.03%) and from August 2011 this will reduce to 100ppm (0.01%).

The surface coating limit is currently 90ppm (0.009%).

AS also tests in accordance with EN71 part 3.

CADMIUM - Regulations are being tightened for cadmium. Currently we test to the Toy Testing regs. with cadmium being less than 75ppm released from each component and each colour - components tested separately.

Plating Thickness and Composition

XRF measurements are available for verifying the thickness and composition of plated layers. This is required to establish plating specifications, for example :-

Physical Testing

A range of Physical Tests is now available from Sheffield Assay Office Analytical Services. As these are likely to be tailored specifically to your products please contact us to discuss your requirements.

REACH

In response to the demands of REACH and other International requirements Sheffield Assay Office Analytical Services has added Azo Dyes and Phthalates to the range of testing on offer.

Packaging 

The composition of packaging materials, and any possible tarnishing effect on the jewellery enclosed, can be tested in our laboratory.

Spectacle frames

Following extensive work carried out for frame manufacturers the provisional test ENV 14027 (also referred to as 'Certottica') is now part of a redefined BSEN 12472:2005 and testing includes BSEN1811. Please contact us for further details.

Due Diligence

Confidential advice is available to assist with the introduction of due Diligence Defence.

A Certificate of Conformity Scheme is available that includes Due Diligence Defence, purposive sampling and stock audits.

Leather Testing

A range of tests specific to leather is now available to cover jewellery, fashion accessories and other items.
