The Library

Sheffield Assay Office has a significant and comprehensive library with over 4000 books, including some highly specialised and rare volumes. Subjects covered range from detailed information on precious metals, including their mining, metallurgy, chemistry, manufacture and history.

Highly specialised works include books on specific silver collections, exhibitions, jewellery, church plate and marks on silver and gold throughout the world. We also a have a large collection of catalogues of various Sheffield firms of silversmiths, which are available for reference.

Personal visits to the Library

Sheffield Assay Office welcomes visitors from both home and abroad, who come to consult the resources. We aim to provide a high quality information service to customers from all sectors and all types of organisation. Both individuals and groups or societies can have access to the library and archives by appointment.

There are no charges for individual students but charges are made for researchers, collectors and groups  (maximum of six per visit), as well as those clients with commercial requirements. 

The library facilities are available for appointments:

Monday and Tuesday:  9:00 – 12:30 and 1:00 – 4:00pm
Wednesday: 9:00 to 1:00 pm

For those unable to visit the library Sheffield Assay Office can undertake research on your behalf if you are unable to visit the Library.
