A New Year Brings a New Chairman for Sheffield Assay Office

07 Jan 2016

Jill Barnett

Sheffield Assay Office is pleased to announce that it will be starting 2016 with a new Chairman at the helm. Peter J Hayes took over as Chairman on 1st January, having joined as a Guardian in 2007 and being elected on to the Executive Committee in 2010.

Mr Hayes, a University College London Civil Engineering graduate, gained an MBA at Cranfield University and has a background in international corporate banking, during which time he was located in various countries. He will become only the tenth Chairman of Sheffield Assay Office in the past 100 years and succeeds the outgoing Chairman, Chris Heaton, who has served in the post for the past four years.

For the first time in its history the Assay Office has also appointed a Deputy Chairman, Mr Charles Turner, to support the new Chairman in his role. Mr Turner, a retired Army Officer, is the Managing Director of Edward Turner & Son, a manufacturer of industrial machine knives.  He also joined the Guardian’s body in 2007 and was elected onto the Executive Committee in 2012.  Mr Turner is a Member of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and chairs Made in Sheffield Ltd.

Ashley Carson, Assay Master and CEO of Sheffield Assay Office since 1993, commented on the recent changes, saying “We would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris Heaton for guiding us through the past four very challenging years. We’re delighted that Peter Hayes and Charles Turner are now taking up the reins and look forward to working with them both as we go forwards into a more positive and exciting 2016.”
