Heritage Open Day at Sheffield Assay Office a shining success

11 Sep 2015

Heritage Open Day at Sheffield Assay Office a shining success.

The Sheffield Assay Office was delighted to see such interest from the public for Heritage Open Day 2015. Over 20 people booked to visit the premises and hear about the historical practice of testing and hallmarking precious metals.

The visitors travelled from far and wide including Manchester, Loughborough, and Derbyshire. They all enjoyed an illustrated talk and a tour of the premises in Hillsborough.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament. Today the company assays and hallmarks Silver, Gold, Platinum and Palladium. The Sheffield Assay Office is one of Four UK Assay Offices’ who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.

“Thank you, and all of your colleagues, for such an interesting visit last Friday. Of course we only got a snapshot, but the impression I got was that the Assay Office is a happy place to work, with people proud of the work they do, and quite right too” -Paul Charity
