Little Gems 2013

09 May 2013

This year marks 10 years of the Little Gems Commissions Project. This project was started to encourage and develop new silversmithing talent in Sheffield and continue our city’s long standing tradition of metalworking expertise and creativity.

To date we have commissioned 19 Little Gems pieces, all created by talented, early-career silversmiths who are part of Yorkshire Artspace’s prestigious Starter Studio Programme for Silversmiths and Jewellers.

This year we asked silversmiths Sarah Pasley and Colette Bishop to respond to the theme of 100 years of stainless steel and look at ways to see how their pieces could celebrate 240 years of the Assay Office. They were each given a fee of £1000 and a 1kg bar of fine silver kindly donated by Capella Manufacturing, bullion dealers based in Buxton, to incorporate into their commissions.

Sarah responded to this request by creating a beautiful Rose Bowl and Colette produced a stunning Decanter, as part of the 5th annual Galvanize Sheffield Festival both of these pieces are currently on show in the Foyer Display Case of the Museums Sheffield Millennium Gallery. This display will last until the 30th September 2013.

The foyer is an introduction to the Little Gems - 10 Years On exhibition this is also located within Millennium Gallery housed in their Metalwork Gallery.  This is the first time all 19 commissioned pieces have been displayed in one place, as they are normally split and shared within the collections of Millennium Gallery and The Sheffield Assay Office.  This exhibition will be running until April 2014.
