Little Gems 2014

Monday 28th April – 1st September 2014

Commissioned in Sterling Silver by the Sheffield Assay Office

Jennifer Ricketts is the latest recipient of the Starter Studio Programme for Designer Silversmiths, based at Yorkshire Artspace, Persistence Works on Brown Street, Sheffield. This programme offers access to a fully equipped shared workshop, technical; and mentor support, exhibition opportunities as well as ongoing business advice. Over the last 11 years, The Sheffield Assay Office have given 20 emerging silversmiths the opportunity to test out new ideas and realise their designs in silver through the annual Little Gems commission. These objects join the Metalwork collections of Sheffield Assay Office and Museums Sheffield
Assay Office. Thanks go to Capella Manufacturing Limited for sponsoring some of the silver for the commission.

Jennifer has designed and made a little Sheffield flower holder in sterling silver. The flower holder is made from a number of hand pierced silver pieces showing iconic buildings in Sheffield today. These include the Cutlers’ Hall the Wicker Arches and the Sheffield Assay Office in Hillsborough sitting amongst chimneys that hold the flower stems. The buildings stand upon a curved silver bar representing the rivers and canals that were vital for the city’s metalworking power and trade.
