Caroline Leng

Budding baker Caroline revels in her testing role

Caroline Leng studied at Sheffield Hallam University and graduated with a BSc Hons in Forensic and Analytical Science. She originally joined Sheffield Assay Office in 2007 as a laboratory assistant on a placement for a year and returned as an analyst after graduating in 2009. She left in 2011 to gain experience of working in other labs but returned in 2012 and became more involved with working with our placement students.

In 2014 Caroline became our lead ICP-MS analyst and was later promoted to Chemist Leader. She now manages a team of five staff including a placement student and is responsible for the following work areas:

She analyses data and inputs results and carries out some analysis and method development.

Caroline says that one of the best things about working at Sheffield Assay Office is the people she works with. She really enjoys spending social time with her colleagues, especially when they have worked together for charity on bake sales for Children in Need and Comic Relief.

When she’s not working Caroline enjoys travelling and visiting the United States in particular as she loves the diversity of culture and scenery across the different states.

Apart from holidays, she relaxes by watching films, especially 80’s Brat Pack movies. She is very interested in vintage fashion and makes her own hair accessories. She also really enjoys baking and would love to own a bakery one day.

We’re delighted to have Caroline as a key member of our Analytical Services team and really appreciate her enthusiasm and commitment to her role at Sheffield Assay Office.

If you would like to find out more about what we do, such as mercury testing and our full range of analytical services, you can email us at or complete the contact form on our website at
