Assay Master presents Prize of Excellence at Sheffield Hallam University Degree Show

14 Jun 2014

Sheffield's Assay Master, Mr Ashley Carson, along with Course Leader and Tutors, Jeff Durber, Chris Knight and Sheffield Assay Office Curator, Emma Paragreen, attended Sheffield Hallam University on 12th June to judge the work from this year’s Metalwork and Jewellery degree programme.

Following a private viewing, the Assay Master selected a winner from 29 graduating students who exhibited work - 25 from the BA course, one from the Masters Design course and three from the Masters of Arts.  Jeff Durber, Course Leader of the Metalwork and Jewellery Department said “This year there is a very broad and exciting spectrum of work, reflecting the breadth of current craft practice in Sheffield”.  The Assay Master commented that “the work this year was innovative, finished to a very high standard and was very professionally displayed”.

This year’s Assay Master's Prize for Excellence winner was Hannah Chapman, who was congratulated by the Assay Master and presented with a cheque for £500.00.

The Sheffield Assay Office has a longstanding relationship with the Metalwork and Jewellery course at Sheffield Hallam, and for more than 20 years has supported students by:

• Subsidising sterling silver stocks for final year students (almost 2 kilos used this academic year)

• Offering free Hallmarking services (traditional marking and laser marking) and technical advice

• Offering access to the Assay Office library resources

• Rewarding high standards of design and craftsmanship with the Assay Master's Prize for Excellence

Mr Carson was delighted to have the opportunity to wish all the graduating students the very best in their future careers, adding that he looked forward to seeing their designs pass through the Sheffield Assay Office in years to come.
