Review of the year 2014

23 Dec 2014

As we approach Christmas, it’s an appropriate time to review the past year at Sheffield Assay Office.

2014 has been a significant year for us in many ways. One of our biggest highlights was that on 12th May we opened an office in Malpensa, just outside Milan. This was a landmark day for the UK hallmarking industry and it was particularly pleasing that we were the first assay office to open up a branch overseas to take advantage of significant commercial opportunities in what is becoming an increasingly globalised market place. The Assay Master and our Chairman visited the new office in July to meet with Aaron Walker our branch manager, and his hallmarking team and we are delighted to be working with them in this new venture.

Another highlight took place in June, when we welcomed Dr Belen Morales to our team as Commercial Manager. Having studied at the University of Seville, University of Madrid and Sheffield Hallam University and been awarded with a BEng in Chemical Engineering, MSc in Environmental Engineering and a PhD in Construction Materials Belen was certainly well qualified to make an impact. She has certainly done that and in the past six months her dedication and hard work have shone through and she has become an integral part of our team. In fact, she has already been promoted to Head of our Analytical Services division and is contributing to their increased success.

Our talks, tours and enquiry days continue to be popular and attract a wide range and encouraging number of visitors to Sheffield Assay Office. We delivered 42 talks and tours during the year and received 852 visitors including dignitaries such as the Bishop of Sheffield, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield and the Master Cutler. 690 people used our conference facilities over the past year.

Assay Master Ashley Carson summarises 2014 as follows:

“It has been a very challenging year, due to the general economic climate, but as a business we feel that we are in a much stronger position now than we were at the beginning. We are very optimistic for 2015 in both divisions of the assay office – hallmarking and analytical services.”

Chairman Chris Heaton concludes:

“2014 has been a challenging but successful year for us. I’d like to thank everybody at the Sheffield Assay Office for all their hard work and I wish them and our customers a very Happy Christmas. We are looking forward to 2015 as there are new opportunities for us to get involved with and there are many exciting prospects in store for us.”
