Sheffield’s Latest Golden Girl!

04 Sep 2012

Karen Williamson has become the latest runner from Sheffield to win gold!

Karen was awarded a custom-made gold medal at the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run on Sunday (2 September) after becoming the 2012th person over the finishing line.

The 36-year-old completed the Sheffield 10K course in one hour and five minutes to receive the unique prize, which was created to mark Yorkshire’s medal success in the London 2012 Olympics.

Kristian Brightmore from Ashbourne, Derbyshire, Fiona Werra in Rotherham, Martin Payne of Sheffield and Michaela Ramsden in Barnsley were all presented with special sterling silver medals after being picked at random at the finish line on Arundel Gate in the city centre.

All five medals were produced by the Sheffield Assay Office, which also included a hallmark to celebrate the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The medals are now worth approximately £400 each.

Approximately 6,000 people took part in the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run, including elite athletes, amateurs, celebrities and first-time long distance runners.

Entrants can now sign up to the reminder service for the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run 2013 by visiting www.greatrun.org.
