Sheffield Assay Office Announce Overseas Hallmarking Branch Opening During Visit from Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg

02 May 2014

The Sheffield Assay Office is delighted to announce the opening of the first UK Assay Office overseas branch, in Malpensa, just outside of Milan, Italy on 28 April 2014. Nick Clegg, the UK Deputy Prime Minister and Sheffield Hallam MP, attended the Assay Office on 25 April in a commemorative visit to mark the announcement.

In February 2013, change to the Hallmarking Act allowed the four UK Assay Offices to compete with European offices, which were already free of geographic restrictions.

Ashley Carson, Assay Master of the Sheffield Assay Office stated “This is a landmark day for the UK hallmarking industry and I am delighted that Sheffield Assay Office is the first to open a branch overseas opening up significant commercial opportunities in a market place that is becoming increasingly globalised.

“By establishing an office oversees we can increase control, giving manufacturers an extended lead time on deliveries and streamlining company logistics.”

“It’s a win-win situation: great for the hallmarking industry, great for UK trade.

“Above all it’s putting Sheffield firmly on the world map as a centre of hallmarking excellence, a badge of honour we’re proud to wear.”

Nick Clegg said “I am absolutely delighted to see Sheffield taking advantage of the changes to the Hallmarking Act, allowing Sheffield to finally compete in Europe, enabling our city’s Assay Office, a jewel within Sheffield’s crown, to thrive not only in the UK market, but also now within Europe.

Two local Sheffield artists, Annette Petch based in Manor Oaks Studios, and Jen Ricketts, based in Persistence Works in Brown Street, have been commissioned to develop the first articles to be hallmarked in the new location.
