Hallmarking is the oldest form of consumer protection in the UK, which has existed since 1300. Used to verify the accuracy of gold, silver and other precious metal. Gold and silver have always been important to man throughout the centuries he has sought to verify the precious metals in his possession.

The book tells the fascinating story of hallmarking, a story which includes kings, queens, lawful citizens, skilful goldsmiths, duty dodgers, counterfeiters, forgers, a medical student, an Indian Maharaja and gold rush prospectors.
