The 36th edition of the Bradbury's Book of Hallmarks is now available!

20 Sep 2018

The Sheffield Assay Office is proud to announce that the 36th edition of the Bradbury’s Book of Hallmarks is now available. This new edition marks the 245thanniversary of the Sheffield Assay Office. This unique little pocket sized reference book is of great value, providing the reader with the marks of origin on English, Scottish and Irish Silver, Gold, Platinum and Palladium and on foreign imported silver and gold plate. The publication provides updates to hallmarks and incorporates recent research into duty marks, it also includes details of a further marks that appear on precious metals until 2023.

For over a year Sheffield Assay Office have been working very closely with NorthendCreative Print Solutions, based on Clyde Road, Sheffield.  The company like the Sheffield Assay Office is a well-established firm with an excellent reputation in publishing and printing with 128 years’ experience. Emma Paragreen, Curator, Librarian and Archivist for the Sheffield Assay Office said we start to compile information once a new book has been published so for  example the 245thanniversary edition I started collecting and researching information almost four years ago. Members of the trade and researchers kindly send us information and of course there are always changes in the law. The book takes over a year to compile all the amendments and then these are worked through with Northend Creative Print Solutions, the efficient design team with Emma Nunnington, Book Specialist at the helm, Dave Nash, designer/ reprographics and numerous meetings take place to discuss the content, page layouts and  finally the all-important front cover! We finally arrive at an almost finished product.  But this is not the first time the two companies have worked together The Bradbury’s Book of Hallmarks was originally printed in Sheffield with the first edition printed in 1927, the publication moved to another publishers in Lutterworth but in 2007 when Sheffield Assay Office purchased the rights from the Bradbury family the printing of the book returned to Sheffield and where more fitting to return to the original printer of the book and the binders F.F. Allsopp &Co Ltd in Nottingham.

I am delighted that we are launching the 36th Edition of the famous Bradbury’s Book of Hallmarks. It has been a pleasure working with Northend Creative Print Solutions.Yet again they provided Sheffield Assay Office with a very prestigious publication and our sincere thanks go to them. In my opinion it is the most complete and comprehensive book on hallmarks available.

Ashley Carson, Assay Master, Sheffield Assay Office

Quote from Northend Printers

Northend commenced printing in 1889 and it’s amazing to think that we are still working in partnership with customers over a century later. Change has been a constant during the time we have worked with the Assay Office, socially and technologically.

Putting the customer at the centre of everything we do hasn’t changed in 129 years and the core reason we still exist today.

Nigel Stubley, Managing Director, Northend Creative Print Solutions.
