Enquiry Day Nov14

Do you have a piece of jewellery that you’d like to know more about? Are you inquisitive about a family heirloom and keen to establish how old it is and what it’s made of?

At Sheffield Assay Office we offer enquiry days where Emma Paragreen our Curator and Librarian and Matthew Hawker our Quality Manager examine objects brought in by members of the public and give them more information about them.

Our latest enquiry day was held on Friday 31st October, where Emma and Matthew were able to shed more light on the mysteries surrounding a number of interesting objects brought in by the general public.

By identifying hallmarks on the precious metal Emma was able to accurately date a ring for one lady, and to establish a registered design number on a pair of earrings for another. Meanwhile, Matt used X-ray fluorescence to non-destructively test a metal brooch and bracelet to discover they were made from brass and iron. Other items brought in for scrutiny on the day included two interesting necklaces of foreign origin. After more non-destructive testing Matt and Emma were able to establish that these pieces were made from 18 carat Gold.

If you’d like to put our experts to the test and discover more about your own family treasures, you can book an hour long appointment and bring along a maximum of three objects to be identified for just £15.

XRF TestingOur next enquiry day will be on Thursday 18th December 2014.
