Yorkshire’s Olympic success celebrated with running medals

15 Aug 2012

Yorkshire’s medal success in the London 2012 Olympics is being celebrated at the latest sporting event in the county.

Every entrant into the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run will have the opportunity to win a unique medal to mark their participation in the Sheffield 10k running event on Sunday, September 2.

A custom made gold medal will be awarded to the 2012th runner across the finish line, while four sterling silver medals are to be awarded to lucky individuals picked at random.

All five medals, which are worth more than £250 each, have been specially produced by Sheffield Assay Office, which provided a number of medals to runners in the 2011 race.

Yorkshire won a total of 12 medals at this summer’s Olympic Games with seven gold, two silver and three bronze. This would have placed the county 12th in the overall final medals table standings if it had competed as a country.

Former athlete John Mayock is organising the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run. He said: “Yorkshire’s success in the Olympics was truly remarkable and one of the key highlights of the whole Games. We wanted to celebrate that achievement by providing every entrant into the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run with the opportunity to win their own gold or silver medal.

“The sterling silver medals produced by Sheffield Assay Office last year were a great success and we wanted to continue them in 2012. The addition of the gold medal will make it truly unique and coincide with celebrations of the Olympics success this year.

“You never know, the next Jessica Ennis or Alistair Brownlee might be taking part in the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run and these medals could be the first of more to come for the Yorkshire region.”

The winner of the 2012th gold medal will be presented with the accolade at the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run in the Peace Gardens. Winners of the sterling silver medals will be drawn at random from all the runners which completed the course, with the prize posted to the entrants at a later date.

Entry into the Bupa Great Yorkshire is £27 for adults, while youngsters can sign-up to the Junior and Mini Run for just £9.

The Bupa Junior and Mini Great Yorkshire Run will take place on the same day as the main event (September 2) and involve a city centre route. Youngsters aged 3-8 can take part in the 1.5k Mini Run, while the 2.5k Junior Run is for ages 9-15.
