A Distinguished Visit to Sheffield Assay Office
Sheffield Assay Office was pleased to welcome the Master and Mistress Cutler on 7 January, for a visit hosted by Assay Master Ashley Carson, Chairman Charles Turner, and Head of Commercial Operations Sara Hale.

The visit opened with an informative talk from the Assay Master, highlighting the Assay Office’s long-standing role at the heart of Sheffield’s historic metalworking tradition. He outlined how the Assay Office continues to uphold legal hallmarking standards, protect consumers, and support the integrity of the precious metals trade both locally and nationally.

This was followed by a tour of the premises, including the Analytical Services Laboratory, where the Master and Mistress Cutler were shown the advanced testing and analytical techniques used to independently verify the composition and quality of precious metal items — reinforcing Sheffield’s reputation for precision, craftsmanship, and quality assurance. The occasion concluded with lunch in the Library.

To mark the visit, the Master and Mistress Cutler were presented with a commemorative keepsake, including a silver keyring hallmarked with the new 2026 date letter “B” and personalised on the reverse, alongside a copy of Bradbury’s Book of Hallmarks — a fitting tribute to Sheffield’s enduring legacy as a centre of excellence in metalworking.

The visit highlighted the Assay Office’s continued commitment to maintaining trust, transparency, and consumer confidence, while celebrating Sheffield’s proud industrial heritage and its ongoing relevance today.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
