Andy Gaymond Celebrates 42 Years at Sheffield Assay Office

Andy Gaymond is celebrating an incredible 42 years at Sheffield Assay Office. Since joining on 10 September 1984, Andy has become a familiar and much loved member of the team.

Over four decades later, Andy is still very much part of the team, having built an impressive career that began in hallmarking and maintenance. His first few weeks were spent learning press and hand marking before he moved into full-time maintenance. Andy continued developing his skills, studying painting and decorating at college before gaining an electrical installation qualification at night school. He also learned from electricians, engineers and joiners before becoming Maintenance Manager. Over the years, Andy has seen major changes at the Assay Office. Traditional methods have made way for laser marking and XRF machines, which have transformed sampling by making the process much quicker than the old method of scraping a sample and sending it to the laboratory.

Although Andy is often “here, there and everywhere” keeping the building and equipment running, some of his favourite memories include attending company functions, working with the many characters he has met over the years and helping to open a site in Italy.

So, what has kept him here for 42 years? “Every day is different and a new challenge and I’m still learning new skills every day.” And how does it feel to reach such a remarkable milestone? “A walk in the park… a very big one at times.” Andy says.
