Further Investment in Specialist Equipment Satisfies Increased Demand for Analysis

Sheffield Analytical Services (SAS), a division of Sheffield Assay Office, has recently acquired a second Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) instrument to satisfy the increased demand for elemental trace analysis of nickel, cobalt and ferroalloys alloys, precious metal, jewellery articles, medical devices, cosmetic and beauty products.

The new purchase, a Perkin Elmer NexION ICP-MS series 1100, not only increases our testing capacity but also improves efficiency. The NexION ICP-MS 1100 is a unique three-quad of mass resolution and a single gas channel, which provides a universal solution for most applications, leveraging helium only for collision mode or helium-hydrogen mix for collision and reaction modes. In addition, an automated in-line dilution system, Prefast, has been added to the instrument to eliminate the manual dilution step and to perform serial dilution of a single solution and rinsing for next series of samples.

Table 1 shows the latest results for SAS as part of the LGC Axio Cosmetics proficiency testing scheme. SAS tested for trace elements using ICP-MS and all results were categorised as satisfactory (a z-score of less than 2 is classed as satisfactory).
