Exploring Silver: Sheffield Assay Office announces new exhibit in partnership with David Mellor and Modern Creatives

Published: 29th June 2019

'Exploring Silver: Form, Pattern and Texture' is a special exhibition of rarely seen silverwork from the Sheffield Assay Office collection. The exhibit opens on the 6th July at the David Mellor Design Museum in Hathersage, with branding and design by Sheffield company Modern Creatives.

The exhibition comprises specially selected objects from the Assay Office’s own collection, each chosen due to their uniquely interesting forms, patterns and textures typical of their eras. With exhibits ranging from the 1930s to the present day, this is a unique opportunity to see work by some of the finest silversmiths of their generations.

Corin Mellor, Creative Director of David Mellor Design Ltd spoke of the exhbit, saying ‘My father David Mellor grew up in Sheffield in the 1930s and studied here for the next two decades. Although he was a convinced modernist he never lost his respect for the great traditions of Sheffield metalworking. This exhibition contains pieces from several people David knew and worked with, for instance Jack Spencer, a highly skilled employee in my father’s early workshop in Park Lane.’

Each object on display is a fine example of virtuoso design and craftsmanship with all proudly bearing the famous Sheffield hallmark. The opening of the exhibition coincides with Goldsmiths North, the new international selling fair of the finest contemporary Silverware & Jewellery from the UK and Europe being hosted at the Cutlers’ Hall (12 - 14 July).

Exploring Silver runs from the 06 July – 03 October at David Mellor Hathersage and is free to visit.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
