International Hallmarking Convention's Standing Technical Committee Comes to Sheffield

This month here at Sheffield Assay Office, Assay Master Ashley Carson hosted the Standing Technical Committee of the International Hallmarking Convention.

The Standing Technical Committee is a sub-committee of the International Hallmarking Convention. Mandated from the Convention to discuss and propose technical issues and also co-ordinate the Round Robins within the Convention.

“It has been a tremendous honour to host the meeting and welcome my colleagues to Sheffield” said Ashley, the former chairman of the committee and a current member.

The Assay Master hosted a special dinner party at the prestigious Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield and then held the official meeting at the Assay Office's state of the art premises in Hillsborough the following day.

The event included an informative tour of the Assay Office facility and a sub-committee meeting took place the following day to discuss arrangements to celebrate an impressive 50 years of the Hallmarking Convention, which will be hosted by Cyprus Assay Office in October.

The next meeting of the Standing Technical Committee will be held in early 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.


The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
