Remembering Stan Shaw - Memorial Appeal

Published: 17th March 2022

On Sunday 27th February, family, friends and colleagues gathered at Sheffield Cathedral to pay their respects to Stan Shaw. Stan died on 26th February 2020 after almost 80 years of manufacturing the most exquisitely beautiful, hand-made pen and pocket knives for rock stars, royalty and the general public.

Stan was one of Sheffield's best known silversmiths and also made knives for Her majesty The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, President George Bush Snr and several of Sheffield’s Master Cutler’s.

In 2003 Stan was made a Freeman of the Company of Cutlers in Sheffield and in 2016 he was awarded the BEM by The Queen. The service was a fitting tribute to Stan and enabled people to talk about the wonderful pieces he had created.

Sheffield Assay Office, along with Sheffield Museums Trust and Stan’s family displayed knives made by him for people to look at and talk about. These included three pieces from the Sheffield Assay Office collection including an exhibition knife, made in 14 carat gold, stainless steel and pearl, with 14-bladed knife with pearl scales, gold inlaid sections engraved with Sheffield rose & florid arabesques brass webs, steel blades backs & springs decoratively filed & polished. Also on display was a facsimile platinum knife made for Her majesty the Queen and a simple, excellent quality pen knife made of Sterling silver and Steel, with 2 blades and hallmarked at Sheffield Assay Office.

The service was followed by the launch of ‘The Stan Shaw Memorial Appeal’ to raise funds for a permanent, public memorial to Stan in his home City of Sheffield, England.
