Sheffield Assay Office celebrates MA Jewellery and Metalwork students

Sheffield Assay Office was pleased to celebrate the work of this year’s MA Jewellery and Metalwork students and the wide range of ideas, materials and approaches represented across the exhibition.

Sara Hale, Head of Commercial Operations at Sheffield Assay Office, attended the exhibition and presented three Highly Commended awards, as well as the Assay Master’s Award to the overall winner.

Fiona Blythe received a Highly Commended award for Collect, Contain, Redistribute: A Reliquary for Nature. Her collection of wearable containers holds seeds and is designed to be handled, with pieces that slide and twist open before the seeds can eventually be scattered somewhere they may grow.

Heli Meng was Highly Commended for The Hidden Self, a project exploring the contrast between the parts of ourselves we show to others and the emotions we keep hidden. Through wearable containers, those less visible feelings are given a physical form.

Yufei Qi received a Highly Commended award for Beauty Through Order, which explores beauty through variation and movement as well as structure and order, allowing materials to behave unexpectedly and considering how the body can change the way a piece is experienced.

The overall award went to Isabel Woods for Sibrydion Cymru; Wearable Whispers from the Past. Inspired by her connection to Wales, the project explores heritage and stories of the land through wearable pieces, using jewellery as a way to carry a connection to home and share those stories with others.
