Sheffield Assay Office Attends the 2026 Forfeit Feast

The Forfeit Feast remains one of the most prestigious and enduring traditions in the calendar of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, bringing together Members, Freemen, Associate Freemen, Friends and distinguished guests from across the region and the wider livery movement.
The tradition dates back to the 17th century, when members of the Company were required to pay forfeits, or fines, for failing to attend meetings. During the 18th century, fines were also imposed for the late payment of Mark Rent. The money collected helped to fund an annual dinner, which subsequently became known as the Forfeit Feast. Today, the event celebrates the region’s manufacturing and engineering heritage while encouraging collaboration, innovation and future growth. Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire
Held in the magnificent surroundings of Cutlers’ Hall, the evening celebrated centuries of history, heritage and fellowship, while providing an opportunity to strengthen the valued relationships that continue to support Sheffield’s civic and industrial community.
The evening’s programme showcased the rich ceremonial traditions associated with the Forfeit Feast, with outstanding musical entertainment from Dinnington Colliery Band and a formal welcome from the Sheffield Sea Cadets, adding to the occasion’s unique atmosphere.
It was a privilege to join an esteemed gathering that included the Lady Mayor of the City of London, the Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, civic leaders from Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster, and representatives of the London Livery Companies.
