Published: 17th January 2023

2023 marks the 250th anniversary of Sheffield Assay Office and what better way to mark this occasion than to highlight and promote the work of a few of our talented silversmiths and jewellers.

Back in October, we called out to our registered silversmiths and jewellers to submit an image of their work that had been submitted for assay and hallmarking in 2021/ 2 to be included in a special anniversary calendar.

If you haven’t already received a copy of your calendar, they are now available from our customer counter. Alternatively, you can also get your hands on a copy by sending an email to paragreene@assayoffice.co.uk

These are a limited edition of 250 and only a few are remaining. Read on to view some of the exquisite pieces included in the calendar:

MAY

Jubilee Decanter

Designed by Benjamin James Ryan and made from sterling silver, sapele wood, crystal & rhodium plate

Designed to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee. The base cradles a hand blown crystal decanter supported by 70 solid silver pillars, to represent each of the 70 uplifting years of her reign. At the heart of the decanters blackened sapele wooden base sits a silver plaque engraved with the royal coat of arms and hallmarked at Sheffield Assay Office. The piece is finished with a silver stopper with takes its inspiration from the Sovereigns Orb and references the cross typically found on the top of the orb, in a contemporary style, subtly expressed in the form of the upper half of the sphere. To pay homage to HM The Queen, her royal cipher is engraved on the top on the stopper, at the heart of the cross.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
