Sheffield Assay Office this year is extremely proud to be celebrating its 250th anniversary.

The office was formed in 1773 under an act of parliament, and two and a half centuries ago, right at the start of its long and fascinating history, the Sheffield Assay Office put a marker down for independence and integrity.

This is still as important today as the office continues to honour its heritage, while at the same time developing the services required through investment and innovation. It offers an independent and impartial service to the consumer, with the hallmark being the oldest form of consumer protection that exists. In the early days most of the business came from within a 20-mile radius but now attracts customers worldwide. Today the business has evolved to meet the demands of society and the industry. A cutting-edge analytical laboratory has recently achieved 40 years of UKAS accreditation. Clients for these services are drawn from a diverse range of business and industry.

The 250th anniversary will be observed on 20th September, which is the date the first mark was struck in Sheffield. Over the next 12 months there will be many celebrations taking place to commemorate this historic period. This will not only reference the jewellery industry but also the history and importance of Sheffield. There will be a range of events across the city involving the museums, art galleries and exhibitions telling the story and explaining the history and why this is so important for the consumer and the future.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
