Spectacular Event Celebrates 250 Years of History, Integrity and Innovation

Sheffield Assay Office was founded in 1773 by an Act of Parliament and we were delighted to be able to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the date the first mark was struck in the City of Sheffield, with a spectacular gala dinner on the September 20th 2023.

The Anniversary Dinner was held at the prestigious Cutlers’ Hall with guests joining us not only from Sheffield but from across the industry as a whole. It was wonderful to have colleagues old and new enjoying the event and being a part of such an amazing tradition. We were absolutely delighted that many dignitaries were also able to join us along with colleagues from the other UK Assay Offices and members of the British Hallmarking Council.

Sheffield Assay Office is built on solid foundations and we are very proud of what the office stands for - History, Integrity and Innovation. We will continue to strive to uphold our beliefs for many more years to come.

To mark our 250th year we have scheduled a number of events in Sheffield, with more to come over the coming months, featuring many pieces of silverware from our splendid silver collection. The events will tell the history of Sheffield Assay Office from inception to the modern day and we hope you will be able to join us.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
