Master and Mistress Cutler of The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire visit the Sheffield Assay Office

Two well established organisations within the City of Sheffield met today to learn a little more about one another, the meeting of the Sheffield Assay Office and The Company of Cutlers of Hallamshire. The Assay Master, Mr Ashley Carson was delighted to host the Master and Mistress Cutler, Nick and Liz Cragg, on Friday 22ndMarch 2019 at the Sheffield Assay Office. 

Assay Master, Mr Ashley Carson and members of the Executive Committee, Chairman, Peter Hayes and Deputy Chairman, Charles Turner enjoyed lunch in the Library with the Master and Mistress Cutler, the table set with silver from the Sheffield Assay Office collection. Following lunch the Assay Master gave the guests a tour of the facilities and introduced the Master and Mistress Cutler to members of the team, within the marking hall and the Analytical Services department. 

The Master and Mistress Cutlers witnessed the assay and hallmarking of four precious metals, Silver, Gold, Palladium and Platinum. A process that has been in operation in Sheffield since the office was set up as an Act of Parliament in 1773. 

On departure The Master and Mistress Cutler were presented with two silver hallmarked gifts from the office to mark the occasion of their visit.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
