The Original Team Gather to Clean Sheffield's Millennium Punch Bowl

Published: 25th July 2023

Our Curator, Emma Paragreen was recently joined by the four original designer makers of The Millennium Punch Bowl to clean and care for the special piece. This is no easy task, as the full display consists of a bowl, ladle, plank, cups and 2000 jacks.

Emma was joined by Alex Brogden, Chris Knight, Brett Payne and Keith Tyssen at the Millenium Gallery and it took the team of five a whole day to meticulously clean and tend to this exquisite display, one that means so much to the city of Sheffield.

The bowl has been cleaned approximately every five years and this year, it was in timely preparation for the Millenium Gallery's forthcoming display "Sheffield Assay Office: 250 years of lasting impressions."

The display will open to the public on Saturday 9th September and aims to highlight the work of Sheffield Assay Office over the last 250 years, as well as shining a spotlight on a selection of work that has passed through the office.

To accompany the display at Millennium Gallery, and as part of Heritage Open Day, between the 8th and17th September there will be several events throughout the city to highlight Sheffield Assay Office's important work and Sheffield's special relationship with silver.

During this time, you will be able to discover more about Civic silver at the Town Hall and the Cutlers Hall or take a guided metalwork tour at Sheffield Cathedral.

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
