Three SHU students awarded placements at Sheffield Assay Office

Published: 25th November 2024

The Analytical Services department of Sheffield Assay Office has recently taken on three new recruits who are working towards their university degrees.

Our partnership with Sheffield Hallam University stretches back nearly 20 years now, offering science and IT students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory to develop their technical skills and improve their future employability.

Many of our previous intake have gone on to forge successful careers in the industry, and some have been offered the chance to take up full time employment in our own laboratory after the completion of our course.

Whilst offering a cost-effective method of running routine tasks, host students can make a significant contribution to the organisation and work to a high standard on different types of projects, offering a fresh perspective to the established working practices.

In addition, supervising a placement student can help existing staff to develop their own managerial and mentoring skills.

This process also demonstrates that we are committed to supporting and increasing opportunities for young people in the local area as certified members of the Responsible Jewellery Council.

Welcome Aisha, Precious and Tobechi!

The Sheffield Assay Office was established in 1773, under an Act of Parliament and today the company assays and hallmarks the precious metals - silver, gold, platinum and palladium. Sheffield Assay Office is one of only four UK assay offices who all work to uphold the Hallmarking Act of 1973 and continue to ensure consumer protection for customers purchasing precious metals.
